As generated content takes over our internet, it’s important to know which parts are human.
What is a “human-made” mark?
It’s a simple notice that you put on your content, declaring that a human made it. By linking it to your /made page, you can explain exactly how you made your content.
- Copyright notice tells people that your work is protected.
- Organic label tells people that you grew your food organically.
- Human-made mark tells people that you made your content by yourself.
It’s not anti-AI. It’s pro-honesty. Nothing is wrong with using AI, as long as people know how the content was really made.
How does it help me?
People trust and appreciate content made by other people more. If you make, not generate your content, that’s your competitive advantage. Publicly explaining how you make your content helps you stand out from everyone else that generates it. It shows that you are responsible in your tool use and attracts people that appreciate that.
How to get stared?
This is just an idea, not a service, so there’s nothing to sign up to.
To start, simply write “Human-made” somewhere next to your online content.
Then link that piece of text to any online page that explains how you made it. That’s all. Bonus points if it’s on your own website, with the URL being “/made”.
What to write on my /made page?
It’s your page, so you’re free to write whatever! It will be most useful if you simply explain the process behind your content creation.
If you write articles, write how you get ideas, how you draft, edit, and publish your writing. If you paint artwork, list your tools and software, then explain how you use them. There are no rules - just that you’re honest and mention AI tools, if you use them. If it helps you, here’s an example .
What counts as human-made?
If the idea was born in your brain, it’s human-made. If the final result was written, painted, or otherwise created by you, it’s human-made. If you used AI to find bits of information, it’s human-made.
If you used generative AI tools to create parts of the idea or the final result, it’s partially human-made.
In that case, it’s especially important for your /made page to explain how you used the AI tools. If you used them to make significant parts of your content, it’s best that your mark includes an estimate:
- Human made 90%
- Human-made 80%
- Human-made 70%…
Can I use a symbol or a badge?
Since human-made is just an idea, there is no official badge - but you’re welcome to create your own! Writing “Human-made” is the easiest way to declare authenticity, but you can do the same with a custom image - then link it to your /made page.
If you want the plain text mark to be more recognisable, adding the Unicode bullseye symbol works well:
- ◎ Human-made
This symbol is not just unique, but also very compatible. Unicode U+25CE is a plain text character that works across all systems and makes Human-made look like a notice, like “© Copyright”, instead of just a link. It represents focus, which fits the message.
How can I support the idea?
The best way to support it, is to start using it. Mark your content as human-made, explain the creation process on your /made page, and tell your friends.
If you have your own ideas or suggestions, please let me know . My name is Luka , I’m glad to meet you, and I’ll be happy to build a movement with you.
